How Band-Aids Were Created
A man who was working at Johnson & Johnson, Earle Dickson in 1920. A cotton buyer bought for the company. His wife, who was prone to accidentally cutting herself while cooking required a quick and easy solution to cover her wounds. So instead, Earle decided to do something about it... This is when he came up with the idea for a small bandage that would stick easily to skin. He did this by inventing what would become the first Band-Aid, made from surgical tape and gauze. This was a great innovation in the treatment of cuts!
How Band-Aids Became Popular
Hospitals - In the beginning, only doctors and nurses used Band-Aids in hospitals. These were not for everyone to use at home. Johnson & Johnson had other thoughts, they thought broader than just medical professionals could use those items. They realized hospitals could use Band-Aids to buy them, and in 1921 made the choice literally everybody can use a band-aid. They were $0.60 for a 100 count box of Band-Aids and an awesome buy! People loved them right away! By the 1930s Band-Aids were so ubiquitous, they would be found in home first aid kits all over the US.
The Evolution of Band-Aids
Over the years, Band-Aids have evolved in order to better fit our needs. Gauze and tape: the original Bandaid With that success, they made their first branded Band-Aid using just tape and gauze (which is not a very good bandage but you have to start somewhere). The company then began to use a form of the material plastic in order to reinforce its Band-Aids for strength and longevity. They also started producing Band-Aids in a variety of sizes and shapes so that people could choose the one which worked best for their particular cuts, scrapes.
Band-Aids were made even better in the 1950s! They glued the whole bandage down so it would stick better and not blow away. They expanded the brand in 1978 to add a unique pad into middle of Band-Aid that would not stick like glue onto wound itself. So when the time came to rip off that Band-Aid, there would be less pain! They finally perfected waterproof band-aids in 2005, which means that you could wear a Band-aid and take a shower or swim without worrying about it coming off. This was an awesome invention!
Other Band-Aid Products
Aside from your usual band-aids, Band-Aid was also the first to create many other types of first aid products. They even created bandages specifically for blisters, cuts and burns. Plus they have other nice products such as gauze, wound washes ointments to aid in healing wounds. Actually, there are Band-Aids that have an impressive universe of super heroes and Disney characters into their designs itself which makes even the children more inclined to use it. Children enjoy Band-Aids with their favorite characters, so allow your child to use a character bandage.
Changing First Aid
Band-Aids made it so much easier for people address their wounds. Bandaids were so easy to use and before they came out, no one wanted a big piece of guaze with tap on them. This has placed a restriction on free movement of people.
